Judson Hill

Judson Hill

Georgia Market President at Fine Fettle

Panel: Panel 1 – June 5, 12-12:45pm

Tentative Panel Topic: Evolving Trends in the Cannabis Industry

Bio: Judson Hill is the Georgia Market President for Fine Fettle, one of 6 businesses licensed to cultivate, manufacture and dispense medical cannabis products in Georgia. Born and raised in Atlanta, this is a real homecoming for Judson to combine his cannabis industry experience with his passion for Georgia!

Over his career, he has developed sales teams and raised capital for start-ups spanning fintech, SaaS, cannabis, and fashion. Judson has been focused on the cannabis industry since 2017 and helped launch multiple companies while building a deep nationwide network of both operators and investors. Prior to Fine Fettle, he was a founding team member of Bespoke Financial, the first cannabis specific fintech lending firm focused on providing operators with working capital. They financed ~$1B in cannabis transactions over 4 years across15 states. He also helped launch the first California focused seed-to-sale inventory management software which provided deep regulatory understanding of Metrc and connections with licensed operators across the state. Lastly, he has experience on the brand side of the industry and has been a partner at Higgs, a California based pre-roll brand since 2017 that is also in Michigan, New York, and Canada via licensing deals.

Background in Cannabis: Over the course of my career, I have developed sales teams & strategies across multiple industries spanning fashion and apparel, to ecommerce and subscription start-ups, to SaaS and fintech, and finally landing in cannabis where I’ve worked on both the ancillary and plant touching side. Currently I am raising equity capital and doing business development work to bring established brands into emerging east coast markets. Despite the tough fundraising conditions this year, I have been able to raise over $10M in equity capital and I believe it would be helpful to share with the audience what it took to make this happen!

The past 7 years I have been fully focused on the cannabis industry and have 360 degree exposure, originally getting involved in the California medical market as a partner in the brand Higgs, the first multi-pack of pre-rolls, in 2017. From there I worked closely with Casa Verde Capital, one of the first VC’s focused on the ancillary sector. There I was able to help launch 2 portfolio companies: Trellis was the leading seed-to-sale software platform in California in 2018 as cannabis operators were suddenly required to submit compliant inventory data into Metrc on a daily basis and we educated the top companies on best practices; Bespoke Financial was the first lender providing working capital solutions such as lines of credit and inventory financing specials to cannabis operators, we helped many of the largest brands such as Jeeter scale from relatively unknown to $100M+ revenue generators!

In 2022 as capital began to dry up in the industry and many of the mature markets began to get saturated, I saw an opportunity to combine my industry experience with my political + capital networks on the east coast to help raise capital and bring brands into new markets.

QUOTE

“What excites me the most about cannabis in 2024 is the continued growth into southern states and the massive support for the industry from the American public!

A recent Gallup poll showed that 70% of Amercians support legalization…at a time when people can’t agree on anything in politics!
Just a few years ago Massachusetts was a “”new market”” but now it’s begun to mature while southern states such as Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi are rolling out medical programs and Florida has recreational on the ballot in November.
At Fine Fettle we are 1 of the 3 businesses with a medical cannabis license in Georgia which presents a huge opportunity with 11 million people in the state and Atlanta has grown into the 6th largest metro area in the US while being the de facto “”capital of the south!”””

Peter Glantz

Founder/CEO at Howls

Panel: Panel 2 – June 5, 1-1:45pmm

Tentative Panel Topic: OGs in the Industry: From Gray Market to Legal Business

Bio:
Peter Glantz founded Howls Tincture in 2012 and it has since become the most popular cannabis tincture in New England. He developed the tincture for his own use after becoming a patient and not finding anything suitable in a dispensary. Peter speaks regularly on full spectrum, whole plant infusion plant medicines and is an advocate for best practices in the emerging cannabis industry. He was previously a premiere creative director in the music industry, working with OK Go, Wilco, NPR Music, MTV and many others. He lives in Providence with his wife, son, and cats Rose and Zorro.

Background in Cannabis:
In 2012, I became a medical cannabis patient to manage the symptoms of a degenerative eye condition. I started making tincture for myself and joined a coop. Other patients asked for some of my extra. I said of course, made a label, got it tested, and bottled it for them under the name Howl’s Tincture. Once they started telling me how much they relied on it, the mission of making this valuable plant medicine available to everyone who could benefit from it was born. 2 Years later, dispensaries opened in Rhode Island and they started offering Howls. I’d pick up a garbage bag of cannabis from the dispensary, bring it out the back door to my car, drive it home, make the tincture, then bring it back bottled and labelled. In 2019, Howls launched in MA. It continues to outperform other tinctures head to head, and I believe its because Howls remains the only whole plant infused tincture available on the legal market in Massachusetts retaining the complete beneficial properties of the plant. We do it this way because of having developed trade secrets to use traditional techniques efficiently. This has taught me the value of traditional processing – like people have been doing it for 5000 years. Howls has also been through 5 years on the MA market and 12 years total so as a business owner and operator, I’ve experienced the many legal, regulatory, and market changes. One thing stays steady – cannabis helps people and if you make it well with good intention, it’s a gift to be able to offer it to others. My role in cannabis now aside from the business is to keep advocating for and making space for traditional cannabis processing techniques and products. I have experience with Herbalism and Plant Medicines going back nearly 30 years, all of which informs my cannabis perspective.

Kingpin (ex) at Gentlemen Smugglers

Panel: Panel 2 – June 5, 1-1:45pm

Tentative Panel Topic: OGs in the Industry: From Gray Market to Legal Business

Bio:
Grew up in SC
Went to USC
Supplied army recruits out of Ft. Jackson, SC
Started with a few boats and pretty soon had a fleet.
Imported over 250 tons of green from Jamaica, Colombia, Lebanon and Thailand and ran the East Coast trade.
USC buddy with Henry McMaster, current Governor of SC and the attorney would later catch me.
Main target of Operation Jackpot under Reagan and got charged with § 848 Kingpin status.
Spent 11 years in prison, partly in Atlanta Federal Penitentiary, where I had Al Capone’s cell.
Became a chef and worked in food and bev when I got released.
Re-launched the Gentlemen Smugglers brand, this time legally, in 2022.

Background in Cannabis:
My company, Gentlemen Smugglers, is inspired by my crew in the 70s and 80s. We were infamous for sailing from Jamaica to Lebanon and owning the East Coast cannabis market. For a dozen years, we outran the FBI, DEA, Interpol, and Customs and in a very real way, we were the dispensaries of our time until Operation Jackpot, the first Presidential Sting in the Reagan’s War on Drugs, brought us down. I spent years behind bars, which is ironic because many of the markets I supplied are now open for business. That’s why we rebooted the Gentlemen Smugglers brand to bring quality cannabis to the people, this time legally, and with real social equity reinvestment and unparalleled storytelling at its core. Our crew’s legacy embodies high stakes, high adventure, and a bygone era.

Lots of podcasts but fewer industry events. I’m trying to become more engaged in industry events not only talk about the importance of authenticity but also to use my 50+ years in cannabis to help others in this roller coaster of an industry.
